Wood vs. Plastic Pallets

Compare cost, repairability, moisture, consistency, weight, and reuse loops.

Reviewed November 2, 2026

Start with the operating loop

Identify the product, exposure, cleaning process, handling equipment and receiver requirements. A pallet used once in an open distribution lane needs a different comparison from one tracked through repeated returns. Material choice follows that use case.

Compare evidence for the actual design

Ask suppliers for the relevant design data, load conditions and maintenance guidance. Do not transfer a rating from one plastic or wood pallet to another. Condition and how the load is supported matter alongside the material label.

Include recovery and return assumptions

Write down expected return rates, losses, inspection effort and the receiving outlet at end of use. A reusable design only achieves its intended loop if someone can recover it. Compare total operating assumptions rather than declaring one material universally better.

Keep these questions together

  • Match material to the lane
  • Consider return logistics
  • Evaluate total cycles
