Sort before discussing a route
Count wood, plastic and mixed-material pallets separately. Within a wood lot, separate apparently reusable units from visibly damaged pieces and unknown contamination. This gives a receiving operator a more useful starting point than one number for the whole corner of a yard.
Confirm acceptance on the destination island
An outlet accepting one material on one island does not establish acceptance for another load elsewhere. Ask the actual receiving facility about condition, coatings, fasteners, preparation and appointments. Identify who will transport the material and who can unload it.
Compare the complete next move
EPA places reduction and reuse above recycling in its materials hierarchy. Apply that principle to a credible receiver and an actual load: potential reuse value, sorting, collection and transport all need review. A recycling enquiry is not a promise of free removal.
Keep these questions together
- Separate by material and condition
- Check local requirements
- Quote the complete load
