Define what must be consistent
List dimensional tolerance, deck design, allowed repairs, appearance and receiving requirements. A strict automated line may need a different level of consistency from a manually handled one-time movement. Start with those constraints before comparing supply descriptions.
Treat condition as a specification
For reused units, ask how the lot is inspected and what the stated grade includes. For new units, request the relevant design and intended load conditions. Neither newness nor a reused grade is a substitute for a suitable design.
Compare accepted delivered cost
Include freight, inspection, rejected pieces and the route after use. A cheaper lot can create handling work if it does not meet the receiver’s criteria. EPA’s reuse priority supports keeping suitable material useful; it does not require accepting unsuitable packaging.
Keep these questions together
- Document the use
- Define acceptable repairs
- Compare total delivered value
