Recycling

Repair, Recycle, or Remove?

A practical decision framework for damaged or unwanted pallets.

Reviewed November 2, 2026

Resolve ownership and contamination first

Check that the owner authorizes the proposed route. Keep unexplained stains, odours and mixed contamination separate. A repair or recycling operator needs to know about those issues before accepting material.

Document the defect without assigning a rating

Describe missing boards, split supports, loose fasteners and visible repairs. Provide photographs for a qualified assessor. A checklist cannot establish a remaining safe load or authorize a repair method.

Confirm the receiver for each group

Reusable units, repair candidates and recycling material can have different acceptance criteria. Ask the actual receiver about preparation, sorting and transport. Keep the quote’s scope explicit so the collection does not silently expand to unrelated waste.

Keep these questions together

  • Check ownership and contamination
  • Assess repairability
  • Choose a compliant route
