The 48×40 Pallet Guide

Understand the common GMA footprint, its variations, and the details a quote still needs.

Write the unit beside the footprint

A 48 × 40 inch outside footprint converts to 1,219.2 × 1,016 millimetres. Its outside rectangular area is approximately 13.33 square feet. These calculations describe geometry; they do not give the usable deck area or a load rating.

Look beyond two dimensions

Confirm height, board arrangement, supports and entry openings against the load and equipment. Two pallets with the same footprint can handle very differently. Include the loaded product’s dimensions and any overhang in the request.

Check the receiving end

Ask whether the receiver requires a specific design, condition or treatment evidence. A familiar size is not proof of compatibility with racking, conveyors or export requirements. Have the actual packaging and load assessed where those constraints matter.

Keep these questions together

  • Dimensions are only the start
  • Specify grade and design
  • Confirm load and receiver
